Piezosurgery

Piezosurgery is a modern, revolutionary surgical approach that uses ultrasound (at a frequency of 22,000–35,000 Hz) for interventions that are as atraumatic as possible. The ultrasonically activated tips of the piezoelectric device offer high precision and have a very important characteristic: selective action. They cut bone with micrometric finesse, but become inactive in soft tissue. Thus, the risk of damaging nerves and vessels, as well as traumatising the mucosa, is eliminated, which is reflected in much reduced post-operative oedema.
The clearly superior precision of surgical interventions performed with the piezoelectric device comes from minimal deflection (slipping) of the active part of the device on bone surfaces, a phenomenon often seen when using classic rotary burs.
Last but not least, patient comfort during surgery with the piezotome is much improved because the vibrations and noises typical of rotary burs are absent.
Ultrasonic microvibrations can be used in any implantology, periodontology or oro-facial surgery procedure, facilitating the harvesting of autologous bone grafts.
Studies have shown that using the piezosurgery device reduces operating time and speeds wound healing, with much faster regeneration of the bone subjected to the intervention. At the same time, it reduces intra- and post-operative bleeding, thus giving the surgeon clearly superior visibility of the wound compared with classic interventions.
