Inhalation sedation with nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) helps anxious patients feel calmer during dental treatment while remaining conscious and able to communicate. It is widely used for adults and, when indicated, for children under specialist supervision.
The gas is delivered through a soft nasal mask; effects begin quickly and wear off shortly after the mask is removed, so most patients can resume normal activities soon afterwards, following the clinician’s advice.
Sedation does not replace local anaesthesia for procedures that would otherwise be uncomfortable; it complements it by reducing anxiety and the perception of time in the chair.
Tell us about respiratory conditions, pregnancy or medications at your consultation so we can confirm whether inhalation sedation is suitable for you.
