A misaligned bite affects far more than the look of your teeth. It can set off persistent headaches, neck or back pain, tooth grinding and clicking in the jaw joint. A consultation is worth booking if you notice pain or locking when opening your mouth, clicking in the joint, grinding or clenching at night, unexplained headaches or ear and shoulder pain, worn or cracked teeth, or a recent filling or crown that feels too high when you chew.
Diagnosis combines symptom assessment, palpation of the facial muscles and examination of the joint with digital occlusal analysis on an articulator, which shows exactly where contacts fall and how the jaw travels as it opens and closes. From there we plan the steps needed to rebalance the bite: selective adjustment, rebuilding natural tooth form, or orthodontic and prosthetic work where indicated.
To relax the facial muscles, take pressure off the joint and protect teeth from grinding, we often use a deprogramming splint — a clear acrylic guard made from a digital impression.
