Treating cavities without the drill (ICON resin infiltration)

The advantages are extraordinary, both for doctors and for patients:
– the treatment is completed in a single session,
– it is a method indicated for children, especially as it requires no anaesthesia,
– the progression of the carious lesion is stopped,
– unaffected areas of the tooth are preserved,
– healthy tooth tissues are not affected by the dental drill,
– the lifespan of the tooth is extended,
– the technique eliminates pain,
– the treatment is simple and completed within a single consultation.
The first stage of ICON treatment involves acid etching of the tooth surface with a 15% HCl gel. After removing the acid and drying the tooth surface, the infiltrate is applied in a thin layer and polymerised with a UV lamp. The low viscosity of infiltrating resins is used to seal the pores in the hypomineralised lesion, which act as a diffusion pathway for acids and dissolve minerals and consequently the progression of the carious lesion. The lesion disappears as the microporosities are infiltrated with resin.
Resin infiltration is a method of treating early cavities located on the visible face of the teeth (vestibular) or on the contact surfaces of the teeth (proximal), and is a method of eliminating unsightly white lesions that appear as a result of demineralisation or fluorosis.
