Why is regular dental cleaning important?

Professional cleaning, performed once every 6 months or even every 3 months for wearers of implant restorations or orthodontic appliances, is carried out in the dental practice by specialised staff and consists of scaling, professional brushing and air-flow. Through these procedures bacterial plaque, food debris and tartar are removed — components that cause and favour gum inflammation and cavities. No matter how rigorous home cleaning is, with ordinary tools bacterial plaque cannot be completely removed. Along with the periodic prophylaxis visit, dental or gum problems that have appeared in recent months can be spotted and addressed in time, while they are not yet complicated. Treatment will be simpler, shorter and less expensive.
It is important to note that the scaling session does not affect enamel structure. On the contrary, adherent bacterial plaque and already formed tartar attack the enamel and favour the appearance of dental caries and gum disease.
Air-flow is performed with a specially designed device that cleans in depth the hardest-to-reach places in the oral cavity where food debris can accumulate that cannot be cleaned by simple brushing at home. Using bicarbonate particles and water, the procedure is very effective and indicated especially for people who want to improve their aesthetic appearance, as well as for coffee drinkers or those who eat certain foods that can cause colour changes to the enamel, including smokers.
