Sleep apnea syndrome
October 8, 2024

The most important element for effective treatment of snoring and sleep apnea is identifying the cause with the greatest impact on this pathology (nasal obstruction, septal deviation, nasal polyps, etc.) by the ENT specialist. Depending on the severity of the condition, they may recommend surgical treatment or therapeutic alternatives such as mandibular advancement splints or laser therapy.
Treating apnea with personalised splints helps the patient breathe normally during sleep and avoid temporary breathing interruptions caused by apnea.
The splint is a device made of a hard or resilient material, transparent or coloured, manufactured on the basis of a dental impression. The anti-apnea splint is fitted with a mandibular advancement system and is the ideal treatment for preventing the posterior "collapse" into the oral cavity of the musculature, mandible and soft tissues. In other words, the splint prevents snoring and the appearance of an obstacle in the path of breathed air, ensuring a normal airflow in the respiratory process.
The splints are joined in the anterior or posterior area with a link containing an advancement screw that can be adjusted gradually, advancing the mandible according to the patient's needs.
The splints are worn at night, yet allow masticatory and speech functions. Splints are comfortable devices, easily adjustable, easy to insert and keep the mandible in a fixed position.
Laser therapy is a non-invasive technique that involves applying an extremely controlled and gentle laser pulse to the affected area, thus causing a thermal contraction of the tissue. Stimulation of the tissues in this area in turn stimulates collagen development in the soft palate, thereby reducing its elasticity. The treatment is performed in a few minutes and is painless, so patients normally do not need local analgesics and have no discomfort after the procedure.
The specialisations of our doctors and the technology in our clinic allow us to treat this syndrome through non-invasive and painless methods, helping patients eliminate both bothersome snoring and the general negative effects produced by this condition.
