Digital smile design is a computerised process through which the final result of dental treatments is simulated, so that the patient is free from the fear of an uncertain or non-conforming result.

Current concepts in modern dentistry support, on the one hand, the idea that the dentist must visualise the result in order to choose the optimal treatment plan, and on the other hand, visualisation of the final result by the patient and projecting it between expectations (subjective) and possible limits (objective). It is also useful for improving communication between doctor and technician.

Using "Digital smile design" in designing the treatment plan has a series of advantages, including:

– harmonising the teeth with the rest of the facial features;

– comparative visualisation of the initial and final situation;

– simulating several treatment options;

It is important that both the doctor and the patient understand the limits of prosthetic treatment, whether we are talking about veneers, crowns or dental bridges. During the consultation, based on DSD, a detailed discussion takes place through which the doctor understands the patient's needs and expectations, and the patient becomes aware of the control they have over the result of the procedures to follow. Also, in certain situations the "simulation" can be temporarily transferred into the patient's oral cavity (mock-up) for better visualisation of the final result and analysis of details.
